A desktop launcher becomes useful when remembering one short command is easier than finding an application, navigating a menu, or repeating a small action. Its value is less about replacing a search box and more about connecting a few dependable keystrokes to the work you perform repeatedly.
PowerToys Command Palette, Flow Launcher, Keypirinha, Alfred, and Raycast combine application discovery with different kinds of actions and extensions. Operating-system support narrows the field immediately, while the extension model and paid feature boundaries determine what happens after basic launching. This comparison uses current official sources and does not claim measured speed improvements.
Evaluate actions as well as search results
A launcher can find an application, run a command, switch a window, or call a service. A dedicated document index solves a different problem. Our desktop file search comparison covers filename and content retrieval in more depth. Here the focus is invoking useful desktop actions with the keyboard.
List five repeated actions before installing extensions. Opening the right browser profile, reaching a settings page, inserting a known link, and performing a calculation can be enough. A large command catalog is valuable only when its results remain predictable and its permissions are appropriate for the accounts involved.
The quick difference
| Product | Best fit | Main strength | Limits and payment model |
|---|---|---|---|
| PowerToys Command Palette | Windows users already using PowerToys | Apps, commands, and Windows tools in an extensible palette | Free open source; must remain enabled and running |
| Flow Launcher | Windows users wanting a plugin-oriented launcher | App actions, search providers, and customization | Free open source; plugins and search backends need care |
| Keypirinha | Windows users comfortable with file-based configuration | Catalogs, keywords, and configurable packages | Freeware with specific binary redistribution terms |
| Alfred | Mac users building repeatable local workflows | Search and Powerpack automation | Core app free; workflow features require paid Powerpack |
| Raycast | Mac and Windows users wanting an extension-centered workspace | Core utilities and service commands in one interface | Paid AI and sync scope; platform compatibility varies by extension |
PowerToys Command Palette
PowerToys Command Palette brings app launching, commands, web search, file search, and Windows tools into one keyboard-oriented surface. Microsoft documents customization and extensions, along with controls for how the palette opens. It is relevant when PowerToys is already part of the workstation setup and users want a maintained Windows utility rather than another independent productivity subscription.
PowerToys is free and open source. Command Palette must be enabled and running in the background; installing PowerToys is not enough to establish that the intended shortcut will work. Confirm shortcut conflicts and the exact extension behavior on the current build. The tradeoff is adopting the broader utility package and checking which operations are provided by the base tool versus extensions. Test application launching, one nested command, and one Windows settings action. Choose it when that integrated Windows workflow covers your repeated actions clearly, without assuming that its extensibility automatically reproduces another launcher’s entire ecosystem.
Flow Launcher
Flow Launcher is a Windows application launcher with file search, web search, bookmarks, system commands, calculations, and a plugin store. Its official site describes Everything or Windows Search as file-search backends. This separation is useful: the launcher supplies a command surface, while the selected search service determines part of the retrieval behavior and setup requirements.
The project is free and open source, with themes and plugins offering substantial customization. Community extensions can add service connections or commands, but they also add code, dependencies, and permissions to maintain. A plugin’s existence does not prove that it works with your current application or account. The tradeoff is managing this flexibility rather than treating the store as a checklist of guaranteed capabilities. During a trial, configure only a handful of commands, restart the computer, and confirm that results and shortcuts remain predictable. Flow Launcher fits Windows users who want an adaptable launcher and can keep their installed plugins intentional and documented.
Keypirinha
Keypirinha uses a catalog-and-package model with file-driven configuration on Windows. Its official documentation describes launching apps, files, bookmarks, URLs, and saved sessions, along with calculations and other utilities. It can suit people who prefer explicit configuration files and keywords over a more graphical extension-management workflow.
The application is freeware, and its published license permits use and redistribution of unmodified binary installers or packages under stated conditions. That should not be confused with a conventional open-source license or permission to redistribute modified binaries. The official site currently presents version 2.26; users should evaluate present compatibility and maintenance expectations rather than assuming a frequent release schedule. The tradeoff is a learning curve around catalogs, packages, and configuration. Try changing one keyword mapping, excluding an unwanted result, and moving the settings to another machine. Keypirinha fits experienced Windows users who value configuration control and are comfortable maintaining the setup themselves.
Alfred
Alfred provides Mac search and launching, while the paid Powerpack adds workflows and other automation features. Workflows connect hotkeys, keywords, and actions, allowing repeated desktop routines to be assembled around a common entry point. This makes Alfred relevant when local automation and a stable personal command vocabulary matter more than collecting many unrelated utilities.
The current shop lists the Alfred 5 Single License at GBP34 and Mega Supporter at GBP59. The latter includes lifetime upgrades, while the single-version purchase currently advertises an Alfred 6 upgrade offer. The main page previews Alfred 6, so do not mistake that preview for the version currently offered as the main download. Check the actual checkout and license terms before purchase. The tradeoff is the Powerpack boundary and maintaining workflows as their dependencies change. Test one real multi-step action and inspect every installed workflow’s requirements. Alfred fits Mac users who want to invest in a repeatable local workflow and understand its maintenance.
Raycast
Raycast combines launching with utilities and extensions connected to other tools. Its Windows page and dated changelog show a released Windows product, including version 2.0 leaving beta in August 2026. Older FAQ language still mentioning a Windows beta should not override that newer release evidence. Extensions can target macOS, Windows, or both, so an extension listed in the store does not establish identical platform support.
The free plan includes substantial core functionality and public extensions, and the pricing FAQ permits organizational use. Pro adds capabilities such as AI and cloud synchronization. Current AI plans use monthly credits, with additional rules for model tiers, rollover, and top-ups; paid access does not mean unlimited use of every model. The tradeoff is separating a useful free launcher from the additional subscription and service permissions. Test a required extension on the actual operating system, check what works offline, and review data access before connecting an account. Raycast fits users wanting an extensible workspace who will manage those boundaries deliberately.
How to choose a launcher that stays useful
Run a small trial with the same five actions on each eligible platform. Record the intended result, the shortcut or keyword, and the permissions involved. A reliable action that saves several menu steps can be more valuable than a much larger catalog of commands you rarely remember.
Check ambiguous results. Type a short name shared by two applications or a file and an app, then see whether the chosen result stays sensible. Decide how users recover from a mistaken action. Commands that restart a machine, run a shell, or write to another service need clearer intent than commands that display a calculation.
Include maintenance in the evaluation. Disable a plugin, disconnect the network, and restart the computer. Back up the settings through the product’s supported mechanism and inspect how credentials are handled. For a workplace rollout, prefer a documented small command set over a personalized collection that only its original owner can troubleshoot. Subscription cost is only one part of ownership; extensions, local configuration, and account access can create the larger support burden.
Selection checklist
- Choose by operating system and verify each required extension on it.
- Test five repeated actions with clear, predictable results.
- Check hotkey collisions, background startup, and offline behavior.
- Separate free utilities from paid workflows, sync, and AI allowances.
- Document configuration, dependencies, and permissions before wider adoption.
Choose by action model
Command Palette suits integrated Windows utilities, Flow Launcher offers a configurable Windows plugin surface, and Keypirinha favors explicit catalog configuration. Alfred deserves a Mac workflow trial, while Raycast offers a broader extension-centered approach across Mac and Windows. Choose the tool that makes a few important actions dependable before expanding its scope.
