Desktop image viewers in 2026: IrfanView vs XnView MP vs FastStone Image Viewer vs ImageGlass vs nomacs

Compare IrfanView, XnView MP, FastStone Image Viewer, ImageGlass, and nomacs by browsing, formats, batch processing, color tools, and business licensing.

An image viewer can be the application you open more often than your full editor. You inspect an attachment, compare two exports, check transparency, or resize a set of pictures before delivery. The useful choice depends on those small recurring jobs and on whether the files need accurate color and metadata handling.

IrfanView, XnView MP, FastStone Image Viewer, ImageGlass, and nomacs cover different combinations of browsing and lightweight processing. This comparison uses official product, pricing, and documentation pages checked October 26, 2026. It does not claim measured rendering speed, color accuracy, or support for every camera file.

Viewing, organizing, and editing are different jobs

A viewer should make it easy to move through a folder and inspect the original. An organizer adds labels, comparisons, or metadata workflows. Batch tools transform several files at once. Those functions can coexist, but the person approving a visual delivery should know whether a command changes the original, writes another file, or only changes the display.

Local browsing also differs from a shared brand library with approval and distribution rules. Our digital asset management comparison addresses that larger system. A desktop viewer is useful even in that environment, but it does not automatically govern rights or access across the organization.

The quick difference

Image viewer Best fit Main strength Boundary to check
IrfanView Compact Windows inspection and batch tasks Viewer, conversion, plugins, and command-line options Commercial license and optional format plugins
XnView MP Browsing and organizing a mixed image collection Multiple views, comparison, metadata, and batch processing Company licensing and platform requirements
FastStone Image Viewer Visual Windows review and practical adjustments Full-screen tools, comparisons, and batch conversion Business license and codec dependencies
ImageGlass Modern viewing with optional managed workflows Broad viewing baseline and separate Pro controls Classic, Pro, Store, and business entitlements differ
nomacs Open-source viewing and synchronized comparison Linked zoom and navigation across viewers Current platform packages and exact file compatibility

IrfanView

IrfanView is a Windows image viewer with thumbnails, slideshows, batch conversion, lossless JPEG operations, metadata display, and command-line options. Plugins extend its format and processing capabilities. It suits users who want a direct way to inspect a folder and perform occasional transformations without opening a large editing workspace.

The commercial-use boundary is explicit. Personal non-commercial use and specified educational or charitable uses are free, while business use requires registration. The current information page lists a perpetual single license at USD 18 or EUR 15, with volume discounts. Confirm the appropriate order and any applicable taxes before deployment.

Its practical limit is configuration and format coverage. Check the architecture of the application and any plugins you need, then test a real file from each source. For batch work, save into a separate destination and inspect metadata and orientation afterward. A successful conversion should preserve the information your recipient actually needs.

XnView MP

XnView MP combines image browsing with thumbnails, filmstrip and full-screen views, comparisons, metadata work, and batch processing. Its interface is relevant when you need to assess a collection rather than simply open one attachment. The current product page distinguishes recommended MP from the legacy Classic offering.

The official site requires a license for company use and lists EUR 29 for a single license, with quantity pricing. Private, educational, and qualifying nonprofit use have a different freeware policy. Do not assume the free download grants unrestricted business use, or apply Classic’s platform details to MP.

The product describes embedded color profiles and broad import/export support. Those are reasons to investigate, not substitutes for a representative test. Try a camera image, a transparent web export, and an image with important metadata. If you use ratings or labels, establish whether they travel with the file or remain in the local browsing environment.

FastStone Image Viewer

FastStone Image Viewer is a Windows browser, converter, and editor with a full-screen review workflow. Its documented features include a magnifier, side-by-side comparison, metadata display, tagging and ratings, batch conversion, and common adjustments. It is a candidate for users who spend time selecting useful images from a folder.

Personal and educational use are free. The current order page lists the Image Viewer license at USD 34.95 as a one-time lifetime purchase with free upgrades. Keep that product separate from FastStone Capture and MaxView, whose licensing and purposes differ. A familiar company name does not mean the same license covers every utility.

The format list has practical qualifications, including Windows Imaging Component codecs for HEIC. Test your installed environment rather than relying only on an extension list. During evaluation, compare two versions at matching magnification and save a resized copy. Confirm that it is obvious which file remains untouched and which result is being delivered.

ImageGlass

ImageGlass currently presents a cross-platform viewer with broad format support, color management, animation navigation, crop and resize tools, and optional Pro features. Its current edition matrix is important: descriptions from older Windows-only releases may not reflect today’s product or packaging.

Classic is listed at no charge under GPLv3. Pro Individual is a one-time personal plan; Pro Team permits up to three users for personal and commercial work, while Business uses organization user bands and a defined term. One-time Pro updates cover version 10.x, whereas Business lists all versions during its term. Check the current checkout currency and amount.

Pro adds capabilities such as HDR tone mapping and managed configuration controls. Some advertised printing and presentation features are marked for a later version, so do not count them as delivered today. Choose the edition around an existing requirement, and verify the exact installer or Store distribution because association and support capabilities also differ.

nomacs

nomacs is a free, open-source image viewer under GPLv3. It supports common formats, including documented RAW and PSD viewing, and provides basic transformations such as cropping, resizing, rotation, and color adjustments. Its distinctive feature is synchronized viewers: actions such as panning and zooming can be applied across several views.

That makes it relevant when differences between two images are the task. For example, you may want to examine the same detail in an original and an export without repeatedly aligning the views by hand. This is a workflow recommendation, not a claim that synchronization establishes an objective image-quality score.

Check current packages for each operating system you intend to support and test your actual files. Format labels can conceal differences between camera models or image variants. An open-source license removes a purchase gate, but someone still needs to own installation, update selection, and configuration on business machines.

Evaluate with the files you receive

Build a small set containing a transparent PNG, a large JPEG with orientation metadata, an animated image, a color-profiled export, and your real camera format if relevant. Include one file you know is unsuitable or damaged. The viewer should explain a failure without obscuring the rest of the folder.

Inspect the image at fit-to-window and actual-pixel magnification. Check how the background affects transparency and whether embedded profiles are handled as expected on your display. A viewer cannot correct an uncalibrated workflow simply by offering a color-management checkbox, so use a known reference for work where color decisions matter.

For transformation work, compare input and output dimensions, orientation, transparency, metadata, and file size. Keep the original separate. Decide whether a batch operation should retain location data, remove it, or preserve other descriptive fields. A smaller output can still be unsuitable if the process silently discards information your customer requires.

For teams, record the exact product, edition, distribution, and use rights. Free home use, an open-source edition, and a personal paid plan are different arrangements. Also distinguish a permanent right to use a purchased version from continuing upgrades and managed deployment support.

Selection checklist

  • Bring actual image variants rather than relying on filename extensions.
  • Check transparency, orientation, animation, profiles, and metadata.
  • Separate viewing changes from edits that overwrite original files.
  • Test comparison and batch processing with a reversible sample.
  • Verify business rights, dependencies, delivered features, and update scope.

Choose the right inspection workflow

IrfanView fits compact Windows utility work, XnView MP supports collection browsing and organization, and FastStone Image Viewer emphasizes visual review. ImageGlass offers a current viewing baseline with optional Pro administration and tools. nomacs is worth considering for synchronized open-source comparison. Choose around your actual image set and commercial requirements, with a clear boundary between inspecting a picture and approving its final quality.
