SEO software can help you decide which search opportunities deserve work, inspect technical problems and follow changes in rankings or links. It cannot tell you with certainty why every position changed, and a competitor traffic estimate is not the competitor’s actual analytics. A useful purchase begins with a decision the team needs to make, not the largest collection of charts.
Semrush, Ahrefs, SE Ranking, Moz Pro and Serpstat cover overlapping organic-search tasks with different databases, reporting workflows and usage limits. This comparison uses official product, pricing and documentation sources checked on October 9, 2026. We do not claim independent accuracy tests, guaranteed rankings or measured returns from subscribing to any platform.
Separate research from measurement
Define whether the immediate job is keyword research, competitor analysis, a technical audit or recurring rank reporting. First-party site measurement remains a separate source of evidence; our website analytics comparison explains that layer. Use an SEO platform to form and investigate hypotheses, then compare relevant outcomes with your own search and website records.
The quick difference
| Product | Best fit | Useful strength | Buying boundary |
|---|---|---|---|
| Semrush | A broad organic-search workflow | Research, audits and position tracking | SEO versus combined AI-search packages and extras |
| Ahrefs | Competitor and link investigation | Site Explorer research context | Credits, historical access and project limits |
| SE Ranking | Repeatable multi-site SEO reporting | Tracking, audits and reporting scope | Core and Growth allowances; add-ons |
| Moz Pro | A defined campaign workflow | Campaigns, keyword and link research | Sites, seats and location-based keyword capacity |
| Serpstat | Several SEO tasks in one subscription | Research, tracking, links and audits | Daily queries, checks, exports and team tiers |
Semrush
Semrush belongs on the shortlist when a team wants keyword research, competitor investigation, site auditing and position tracking in a broad working environment. Its current SEO and AI Search pricing presentation separates an SEO package from combined Starter, Pro+ and Advanced offerings. That distinction matters because a buyer may need conventional organic-search work without the same AI-search tracking scope.
The reviewed SEO package lists five websites and 500 tracked keywords. Combined packages have additional prompt or domain allowances, while other toolkits can involve separate charges. Do not interpret the breadth of the Semrush brand as an entitlement to every product in one subscription.
Monthly and annual billing differ, and the appropriate package depends on sites, users and tracking needs. We omit an assumed universal currency and ask buyers to retain the actual quote or checkout. Semrush’s breadth can support a varied team, but select a specific recurring task to demonstrate. A dashboard containing many metrics is useful only if someone can explain which action each relevant signal supports.
Ahrefs
Ahrefs is particularly relevant for investigating competitors’ pages, organic search presence and backlink profiles. Site Explorer brings those research perspectives together, which can help a team decide what to inspect next. Treat estimated traffic and proprietary metrics as research signals rather than verified visits or a direct measurement of business value.
Its current plans include Lite, Standard, Advanced and Enterprise. Lite lists five projects, 750 tracked keywords, one user and a defined credit allowance. Historical access and additional research tools expand on higher packages. Those boundaries can matter more than the subscription headline when several analysts repeatedly investigate many domains.
Ask how the planned workflow consumes credits and what historical period is available in the actual package. Keep billing commitment, currency, seats and any separate product scope visible in the comparison. Ahrefs can provide useful investigation context, but it does not remove the need to inspect the relevant pages and assess whether a search opportunity fits the audience or the business.
SE Ranking
SE Ranking is worth evaluating for teams maintaining repeatable SEO work across several sites. Its official product material covers rank tracking, keyword and competitor research, audits and reporting. The current main subscription page uses Core and Growth, so older guides organized around previous tier names should not determine present-day limits.
Core currently lists ten projects, one manager seat and 2,000 tracked keywords. Growth expands those allowances, including more projects and manager seats. Audit capacity and API-related allowances are also explicit. Additional services for areas such as agency workflows, content or local marketing can create a separate buying boundary.
Annual billing offers a different monthly equivalent from the monthly subscription. Confirm the billing currency and whether the quote includes the extra modules you intend to use. Ask the person producing client or internal reports to reproduce one real reporting cycle. SE Ranking’s appeal is a broad operational workflow, but a large keyword allowance should not distract from database coverage, required locations and the quality of the resulting explanation.
Moz Pro
Moz Pro organizes ongoing work through Campaigns alongside keyword and link research tools. It is a useful shortlist candidate when the team wants a clearly bounded set of sites and tracked terms. Campaign setup documentation explains how keywords and locations consume capacity: tracking a term in multiple locations uses more than one slot.
The current Standard package lists one user, three sites and 300 tracked keywords. Its monthly price is explicitly US$99 on the reviewed official page. Annual displays use a rounded monthly equivalent, so compare the actual annual charge rather than multiplying the rounded number and assuming the result is exact. Other packages expand the scope.
Moz’s keyword documentation also describes coverage boundaries for particular datasets. Check the relevant country, language and type of query using representative terms. Moz Local is a separate product and should not be assumed included with Pro. The campaign structure can be helpful, but validate a report’s source, location and time period before interpreting a metric as a complete picture of search demand.
Serpstat
Serpstat combines keyword and site analysis, rank tracking, backlink work and technical auditing. That makes it relevant for a buyer who wants several ordinary SEO tasks in one subscription. The useful question is whether the limits match the team’s actual investigation and reporting cadence rather than whether the product lists every category of tool.
The reviewed Individual matrix includes five projects and daily search-query limits, alongside distinct allowances for position checks, audit pages and exported rows. Team and Agency packages expand capacity and administration. A keyword check allowance is a different unit from a research query or an export row, so they should remain separate in the budget.
The pricing selector presents annual and monthly options; we avoid assigning a displayed annual equivalent to a monthly cancellable subscription or guessing its currency. Confirm API access and team permissions in the selected tier. Serpstat’s breadth may be sufficient for a compact operation, but demonstrate the busiest planned reporting week before deciding that the entry package covers the workload.
Evaluate the evidence behind a report
Use representative markets. Choose a small set of real queries across the countries and languages you serve. Include a branded term, a long-tail question and a competitive category phrase. Differences between databases can be informative; they are not automatically evidence that one tool is wrong and another is exact.
Count the workload accurately. Write down sites, users, keywords, locations, audit pages and required exports. Check whether a limit resets daily or monthly and whether different devices or locations consume additional capacity. A subscription with ample projects can still be constrained by the task repeated most often.
Turn findings into a work queue. Ask who verifies an audit issue, who can change the site and how the result will be checked. Prioritize relevance and impact rather than treating every warning as equally urgent. A useful report distinguishes an observation from an interpretation and names the next action.
A practical evaluation checklist
- Research representative queries in the actual country and language.
- Inspect one competitor page and a sample of links rather than relying on aggregate scores.
- Run an audit and confirm several findings against the site itself.
- Reproduce a report with the intended sites, locations and export format.
- Obtain a dated subscription breakdown covering seats, limits, add-ons, currency and commitment.
Choose according to the SEO job
Shortlist Semrush for a broad search workflow, Ahrefs for competitor and link investigation, SE Ranking for repeatable multi-site operations, Moz Pro for a defined campaign process, and Serpstat for combined tasks within explicit usage allowances. These are hosted research services. Choose one that makes your team’s decisions easier to explain, and keep first-party outcomes separate from third-party estimates.
